Definition: Contextual targeting is a marketing strategy that delivers content, ads, or offers based on the context of the webpage or content a user is currently viewing rather than relying solely on personal user data. This approach focuses on aligning marketing messages with the topic or environment in which they appear.

Unlike behavioral targeting, which uses past user actions, contextual targeting analyzes the content of a page, including keywords, topics, and categories, to determine the most relevant marketing message.

In popup and email marketing, contextual targeting can be used to display different offers depending on the page a visitor is viewing. For example, a visitor reading a blog post about fitness gear might see a popup promoting workout accessories.

This strategy has become increasingly important as privacy regulations and browser restrictions limit the use of third-party cookies.

Example: A visitor reading an article about hiking equipment sees a popup offering a discount on outdoor gear. The offer is triggered based on the page’s content rather than the user’s past browsing behavior.
