Definition: Cross-selling is a sales strategy where businesses recommend complementary products or services to customers who are already considering or purchasing an item. The goal is to increase the overall value of the transaction while improving the customer’s experience by offering relevant additions.

Unlike upselling, which encourages customers to purchase a more expensive version of a product, cross-selling focuses on related products that enhance the original purchase.

Cross-selling is commonly used in ecommerce through product recommendation widgets, checkout suggestions, email follow-ups, and popup offers. When implemented effectively, cross-selling increases average order value (AOV) and improves overall revenue without requiring additional customer acquisition.

Successful cross-selling relies on recommending items that are genuinely relevant and helpful rather than simply pushing additional products.

Example: A customer buying a smartphone is offered accessories such as a protective case, screen protector, or wireless charger during checkout.
