Definition

Drop-off rate refers to the percentage of users who leave a process or funnel before completing a desired action. This metric is commonly used in analyzing signup flows, checkout processes, email sequences, and onboarding journeys.

High drop-off rates often indicate friction points such as confusing design, too many steps, lack of trust signals, or unclear value propositions. Identifying where users drop off helps marketers optimize specific stages of the funnel.

In popup marketing, drop-off rate can occur when users open a popup but do not complete the form. In email marketing, it may refer to users who open emails but fail to click or convert.

Example

If 1,000 users start a signup form but only 400 complete it, the drop-off rate is 60%.
