Definition: List churn refers to the natural decline in the validity or activity of an email database over time. Even with effective strategies for acquiring new subscribers, email lists will inevitably shrink. People change jobs, abandon old email addresses, or simply lose interest and unsubscribe.

If marketers ignore list churn and continue sending emails to invalid addresses, they risk high bounce rates, which can damage their sender reputation. To prevent this, successful brands regularly clean their lists to remove outdated information and focus on engaged users.

Example: A B2B software group builds a list of 5,000 marketing managers as prospects. Over the course of a year, many of these managers change jobs and deactivate their work email addresses. When the company sends its annual holiday campaign, 1,200 of those emails bounce back as undeliverable. This spike in “hard bounces” signals to email service providers that the company has a low-quality list. As a result, these providers may penalize the company by sending future emails to the spam folder, reducing visibility for the remaining active subscribers.
