Quota

A quota is the limit set by your email service provider on how many emails you can send per day, week, or month. Exceeding it can delay campaigns or lead to penalties, similar to hitting your data cap on a phone plan.

Definition: In email marketing, a quota refers to the maximum number of emails an email service provider (ESP) allows a business to send within a set time frame (e.g., daily, weekly, or monthly). These limits are in place to prevent server overload, reduce spam, and maintain high email deliverability.

Quotas help ESPs manage resources, minimize spam complaints, and ensure legitimate emails are successfully delivered without being flagged. The size of the quota often depends on the pricing plan of the ESP, with higher-tier plans allowing more emails.

Businesses exceeding their quota may face delays, temporary suspensions, or reduced sending limits. Proper quota management also helps maintain email list quality and sender reputation, as sending too many emails too quickly can harm deliverability in the future.

Example: A small business on an email marketing platform may have a daily quota of 2,000 emails. If they exceed this number, they may need to upgrade their plan or wait until the next day to send additional emails.
