How to Display a Pop-up When User is Inactive (User Inactivity Trigger)

Want to initiate engagement when you feel like your visitor has been inactive for quite some time?

As website owners, we understand that we cannot oblige our visitors to always click and browse through our pages all the time, especially if they’re doing something else.

In an era of short attention spans, there are a lot of reasons for user inactivity, and most of them are out of our control already.

Whether visitors haven’t decided yet what to do or buy, being stuck in a page for a long time might also cause them to just turn away and exit.

The good news is, there’s a solution to recapture your visitor’s attention after freezing and help them make decisions.

Drive engagement by showing a pop-up using Poptin’s newly-added inactivity trigger!

What is user inactivity trigger

The user inactivity trigger automatically displays a pop-up once it detects that the user is idle for a specified period of time.

This is used to reawaken visitors and directly talk to them as if you want to tell them something important.

How it actually works

You might be wondering how this inactivity trigger tracks everything in different devices.

To understand it more, this feature automatically monitors the following:

  • for desktops, it tracks mouse movements whether there’s scrolling, clicking or moving;
  • for tablets and mobile devices, it checks touchscreen taps and swipes;
  • and for all devices, it detects if the user is typing.

Generally, it gives a pretty accurate tracking of the visitor’s behavior, giving way for better pop-up performance and results.

In this article, you’ll learn interesting facts on how you can use inactivity triggers effectively to boost engagement, gather more subscribers, and increase sales.

In the latter part, I’ll also teach you how to set it up so you can already try it yourself!

What You Can Do with Inactivity Trigger

  • Promote newly-launched products and collections

Idle time might be the time when visitors can’t decide yet what to buy from your store. Sometimes, customers want help in choosing the best product.

This is the right moment to offer them your best shot!

Create pop-ups that can highlight your new products, seasonal collections, and even those best-selling items. By doing so, you can increase your chances of converting them into customers in no time.

  • Offer sales and exclusive discounts

Website visitors often browse longer on an online store because they’re careful and really want to get all their money’s worth. That’s understandable!

They don’t have the ability to check the items personally so they become very keen on details, reviews, and prices.

Showing enticing offerings such as exclusive discounts and sales can push your visitors to continue shopping, or best case, go directly to the payment section.

One way to attract is to provide a coupon code that they can unlock when they fill up the email form. You add subscribers to your email list, plus you get a chance to close a sale.

  • Close the deal with a “Complete Your Order” pop up

If the visitor is idle on the cart/checkout page, you can remind them to complete their order by showing a pop-up.

Achieve good results when you also put exciting offerings that would excite them to pursue their purchase.

In this way, you can lessen the chance of having abandoned carts and drive more sales.

  • Upsell!

The same thing when the visitor is idle on the checkout page, highlight related items that you think your visitors might find attractive. If she has a summer dress on her cart, might as well offer summer sunglasses at a discounted price like the image above. You can also show similar product options that she can consider.

You give her a great shopping experience, and in return, you improve your revenue.

  • Ask readers to subscribe to your newsletters

Reading articles obviously can encourage inactivity on the screen, especially if readers are so focused and don’t want to click on anything. You may not be exactly sure, but those idle times can mean they’re interested in your content.

For writers and bloggers, this point is the perfect time to trigger a pop up that would ask them to subscribe to your mailing list.

That’s a chance to grow your email database and gain more readers!

  • Encourage visitors to download your free eBook

In relation to the previous point, if visitors are so inclined to reading your article that they become idle for quite a long time, you can show a pop up that enables them to download a free eBook with equally-relevant content. In that way, you can build connections with your readers and expand your influence.
